"Stand up for what you believe in, even if it means standing alone"
I'm sure a lot of self employed experienced this. Recently I went for an interview and told them that my long term plan is to retire. It's suicidal to say that. Because it's not what the normal man in the society think. The society is still into getting a job, which is termed as stable, and then doing the same thing over and over again, day after day, and hoping for pay raise every year.
Side track... The recent Cyprus crisis, in which depositors have to pay a tax for their own savings in the bank did not really seem to be a wake up call for many people. Perhaps for many, it is too far away. Or perhaps they have absolute faith in the financial sector. Or perhaps they think that our banks in Singapore runs a different system than the Cyprus bank. Or perhaps they think that the government is able to "bail them out" if any crisis occurs.
Sad to say, the banks here runs on the same system as the Cyprus bank. What can happen to Cyprus may also happen to England, to Spain, to Portugal, to Australia (anyway, the Finance Minister of Australia said he is considering a levy on deposits in the bank), to US or even Singapore. Well, I'm not sure if the government will help, but i rather depend on myself. End of the day, I don't know how much reserve the country has, but certainly know how much reserve I have. So I rather depend on myself.
